President Welcome

Barry O’Brien Lynch - Navan Rotary Club President 2023-2024

My name is Barry O’Brien Lynch and I am specially honoured to be elected as the president of our Rotary Club for this year 2023/2024, a position my father William held back in 1997/1998. The Rotary Club of Navan has always been part of my life through my childhood, helping register cars for the Car Treasure Hunt, meeting the others members socially and when I would meet my father in the Ardboyne Hotel for a lift home after rugby training on a Tuesday night. William always wore his Rotary pin with pride everywhere he went throughout the world, which often led to meeting other Rotarians in some most unusual places, starting a conversation or where there was a language barrier it could be crossed with a smile of recognition.

We are very lucky to have an extremely active and successful club which has helped a large number of very deserving local charities and exceptional local students further their personal development through the Youth Leadership Awards, a Rotary programme which we have traditionally excelled. Last year our candidate James Connell of St. Patricks Classical School went forward and won his place in a Rotary delegation that went to the The Dail, Stormont and the European Parliament in Strasbourg where they took part in a debate in the parliament building and met elected representatives. I follow in the footsteps of outgoing president Dr. Amin Louli who officiated over a very successful year, giving me a strong foundation to proceed from.

I am an estate agent based in Co. Meath, a profession which delivers a service with purpose. I am energised by our members and their own skill sets, wide and varied, to help produce a coherent, high-achieving team who can work in our locality and reach out to the public for their financial support in order to help those less fortunate and support those who want to further themselves. The Rotary motto is ‘Service Above Self’, a dictum that our members hold dear and use their spare time to help in the community. I would encourage any non-member in our locality who feels that they can offer themselves and their expertise to make contact with me directly.

Rotary is an international organisation which reaches across the globe and takes on international challenges such as fighting disease, helping mothers and children, providing educational supports, environmental projects and helping grow local economies. While the organisation has the reach and knowledge of a very powerful organisation with strong members doing good work, we all, as members, know that all charity starts at home and we in the Rotary Club of Navan have been very successful in securing extra funding through the Rotary International Foundation to support large local projects where the support required would be above what we as a club could hope to raise in a financial year. This is one of the ways I feel where Rotary excels. There is a bigger machine at work to support ANY deserving project, no matter how big it seems, reminding me of the Rotary logo, a cogged gear wheel, demonstrating how we can all work together to achieve goals greater than the sum of our parts by working together both locally and internationally. We will continue to run our various events starting with the Golf Classic, the Kids' Day Out for St Mary’s and St Ultan's special schools, the Annual Cinema Night, the Youth Leadership Awards and our Annual Christmas Tree of Hope and Remembrance in Johnstown and Navan Shopping Centres. Your continued support of the Rotary Club of Navan is much appreciated as it allows us to provide service, above self, to our local community. We look forward to adding to our portfolio of events as the year progresses. If you have any questions, or if you are interested in joining Rotary, our email is secnrc@gmail.com
